Rug Punch Instructions

Welcome to Rug Punch by Hooked on Rugs. Suggested colors are provided , but please feel free to adjust and change as you wish. Hooked on Rugs designed yarns specifically for rug punch and these yarns provide the best results. Hand-dyed yarn colors are variable and this will add to the uniqueness of your finished project.

The design shown was completed using custom spun and hand-dyed rug yarns from Hooked on Rugs. The colors are rich and will produce a slightly different look to each individual project. Hand-dyed yarns will produce a variegated look to your finished rug. The color picture provided on the pattern cover can be used for color placement. Use chart for suggested color choices. Select hand-dyed rug yarns for project. Confirm colors coordinate well and choose alternate colors if necessary.

This pattern is printed in reverse. The design is worked from the printed side and the finished rug will be on the reverse side. The pattern is placed on the hoop with the printed side up. The no slip hoop that is available on the web site will allow the pattern to be tightened securely. Pull fabric evenly around hoop and tighten wing nut repeating until the pattern is as tight as possible. This will allow you to punch with ease. Tighten the pattern backing fabric if the fabric loosens as you progress on your project. If the pattern is larger than your hoop, you may have to over-hoop. Over-hooping is placing the hoop over the finished area. This will matt down loops temporarily, but will not damage your finished project. Project should not be left over-hooped for an extended periods of time. You may have to obtain a longer bolt for your hoop to accommodate the extra bulkiness of the yarn.

Follow needle instructions for threading and punching. The model was punched with a rug rug tool that will allow a 1/4 " loop. Gauge used on model is approximately 4 stitches per inch. Place stitches closer together on corners and outside border. Do not punch tight, but make sure the front is covered with yarn and no backing shows from the front side. All ends are pulled to the surface when beginning and ending. There should be no short ends left on the printed side. A rug hook works well to bring any ends to the finished side of the rug or prod end to front surface with punch tool.

Outline and fill each object as you progress. Punch just inside and just outside the printed lines of objects to be filled in. This will keep the size of the object in proportion. Punch a single line of one color on the printed line. Punch as much as you can complete within the hoop changing yarn colors as necessary. Move the hoop to complete another area if over-hooping is required. Yarn can be easily removed and repunched if a change is desired. It may be necessary to adjust small detail when all punching is completed.

Remove hoop when all punching is completed. The finished rug will curl and not lay flat. Press both sides with a steam iron and let dry. This will flatten the rug and any loops that are not even. Trim yarns ends on the finished side.

There are several ways to bind your rug. This is the preferred method. Serge the close to the finished rug and use coordinating rug yarn to whip around the edges using a large eye blunt tip needle. You can add small cording if desired. This will give the rug a clean finished look. Another method is to simply trim to approximately 2", fold excess pattern over and hem with or without wide twill tape or rug binding tape. When finished with binding, again steam press both sides of the rug and lay flat to dry.
